WITC helps campers learn job search skills ? Wisconsin Technical ...

Nearly every school within the ten county region the camp serves will be represented.

Campers work with the DNR on a variety of projects at the 30,000-acre Crex Meadows Wildlife Area and Governor Knowles State Forest and are paid for their labor, which is an unusual feature for a summer camp and holds great interest for campers. In the past, campers have removed invasive plant species, performed native seed collection, built bridges to increase trail accessibility, and assisted in the entire Canadian Geese banding process.

?Last year, there was a severe wind storm in Grantsburg. The campers during one of the sessions worked on post-storm clean up, which was a great experience because the campers got to work and be involved in the community and with the community members,? said Suzannah Crandall, camp director.

In addition to their work with the DNR, campers participate in a hands-on science and life-skill based curriculum. Some of the science activities have included plant and animal identification, radio telemetry and triangulation, and analyzing and examining water samples. Local school districts support the camp by rewarding the campers with science or elective credit that can be used towards high school graduation. A distinctive aspect of the camp curriculum is that it is delivered by people from different organizations, allowing campers to be exposed to a diverse wealth of knowledge.

?The life-skill based curriculum is a tremendous learning opportunity,? said Crandall. ?This year one of the topics we will discuss is career development. The class will involve looking at the skills and education you need for specific jobs, the process of applying for jobs, and how to prepare a resume and cover letter. Part of this lesson will also be on social media and how others perceive you based on your personal profiles.?

Some of the organizations participating in this summer?s upcoming activities are: Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC), Crex Meadows Education Staff, and DNR Interns. WITC staff will be involved in the career development activity and will be performing career assessments. Crex Meadows Education Staff aid in supervising campers during their conservation projects while working alongside them and leading lessons and other team building activities. DNR Interns share information about the projects they are currently working on.

Campers don?t just work and study, however. There is also plenty of fun and recreation including swimming, sports, trust and teambuilding activities, campfire games, storytelling, movies, canoeing, and hiking. The camp is a partnership between CEP, Inc., the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, Inc., and the federal Workforce Investment Act.

Now Dragon has one last challenge: the trip home.

SpaceX's Dragon capsule is rare in its ability to survive re-entry to Earth and be recovered. Most automated cargo vehicles that visit the space station, such as those built by Russia, Japan and Europe, are designed for one-way trips only, and are destroyed after their missions as they plunge through the planet's atmosphere.

Dragon is equipped with a heat shield to withstand the fiery temperatures of re-entry, which can reach about 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1650 degrees Celsius). That means it can deliver cargo both to and from the space station.

"It's still a very challenging phase of flight," Couluris said. "Only a few countries have done this so far, so we're not taking this lightly."

Dragon is packed with a total of 1,367 pounds (620 kilograms) worth of cargo for the return trip, including crew items, completed science experiments and used station hardware. SpaceX plans to deliver some high-value experiments back to NASA within 48 hours of splashdown, with the rest of the cargo to be sent to the space agency within two weeks.

The mission is a trial run for SpaceX's plan to fly 12 cargo-delivery missions to the orbiting laboratory over the next few years. The company has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA under its Commercial Resupply Services program, which has partnered with private industry to fill the gap left by the retired space shuttles.

SpaceX was founded in 2002 by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who also co-founded Internet payment service PayPal.

29th Annual National Retired Military Golf Classic To Be Held May 29-June 2 In Myrtle Beach

Representatives of Brittain Resort Management announced that the upcoming 29th Annual National Retired Military Golf Classic will be held May 29-June 2, 2012 at five Grand Strand golf courses, all available for vacation booking through the full service resort management firm?s site www.MyrtleBeachGolf.com.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith return to the big screen as members of MIB (the Men in Black), a secret organization that works to keep aliens out of the eye of the general public. MIAMI (CNN) -

Hurricane Bud weakened to a tropical storm as it approached Mexico's southwestern coast on Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, could drench the Mexican states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guerrero and Guanajuanto, the Mexican state news agency Notimex reported.

"Continued weakening is expected during the next 48 hours," the National Hurricane Center said in its 8 p.m. ET advisory.

Earlier in the day, the storm weakened to a Category 1 hurricane.

Bud, the second named tropical storm of the East Pacific hurricane season, was about 80 miles (about 130 km) west-northwest of Manzanillo and 65 miles (about 105 km) south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, the hurricane center said in its 8 p.m. ET advisory.

It was moving north at about 7 mph.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Manzanillo northwest to Cabo Corrientes, while a tropical storm watch is out for the coast north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas, according to the hurricane center.

A hurricane warning and watch, issued previously, have been discontinued.

Bud is expected to bring between 6-10 inches of rain along Mexico's southwestern coast, with isolated amounts of 15 inches possible in spots, the center said.

"These rainfall amounts could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," according to the U.S. weather agency.
