Lookout for Android

Don't be fooled by the appealing green interface and non-alarmist vibe. Lookout Premium for Android ($2.99/month, direct) offers powerful, triple-threat protection against almost anything that can go wrong with your Android device, which currently means malware, device theft or loss, and apps that access more personal information than you realize. Traditional security companies with their own mobile products, such as Norton Mobile Security, Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android, F-Secure Mobile Security, and McAfee Mobile Security 2.0, have quickly caught up feature-wise. However, Lookout has a better grasp of its user, and it shows in this simple, fuss-free app where the only "work" you have to do is install it.

There are two versions of Lookout for Android. The free, ad-supported version includes malware scans, a Find My Phone feature that locates your missing phone on a Google map, and cloud-backup of your contacts.

Lookout Premium (the version I tested) adds four more features: Safe Browsing to block phishing and malicious websites located in text messages or when browsing, remote wipe and lock, a privacy advisor for your apps, and cloud backup for photos and call history, which you can restore on a new device. No more pop-up ads, either.

I tested Lookout Premium on an app-laden Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0.2 and a factory reset Samsung Galaxy S II with Android 2.3.5. If you're an iOS user, check out Lookout for iPhone.?

Getting Started
Getting started with Lookout is super easy. After installing the app from the Android Market, you?re asked to register with a valid email address, to which you?ll be sent weekly newsletters about the status of your smartphone?s security. You'll also use this address to log into Lookout's Web-based admin portal, Mylookout.com. ?

From there, Lookout performs a full scan of your device and SD card for malware and spyware; 95 percent of you will pass this bill of health, given that Android malware is still very low?in real numbers .?By default, scans are performed every day and any time you're about to download an app or file (checked as File System Monitoring in your Settings). You can reschedule daily or weekly scans for a specific day and time of the week, or stick to on-demand scans only. I set mine to run daily at 4 AM for minimal interference with my normal use. On a Nexus with 137 apps installed, the scan took about two minutes, and didn't slow down my usage of other apps appreciably.

Anti-virus That Doesn't Hog Resources
Unfortunately here at PCMag, we don't have the capabilities to test with live android malware, so I can't attest to Lookout's ability to detect or remove viruses and spyware. I'm told that if the app does detect anything harmful it is removed automatically. None of the major labs have tested Lookout (or much of its competition), either, but, when they do, rest assured that we'll update this review.

Security applications aren't the popular kids in school. We expect them to interfere with our device's processing speeds and battery life, making it a no brainer when it comes to cleaning out our app library. You won't feel that need with Lookout. On a cold boot up?where I powered off the phone and timed how long it took to reboot, averaging three tests?the Nexus took 54.5 seconds to restart with Lookout and 51.7 seconds without. The GS2 took 37.9 seconds to load with Lookout and 36.2 seconds to load without. Impressive. Lookout also claims that running its app for one day only consumes as much juice as a 30-second phone call.?

After setup, Lookout only turns on when your device connects to a server. You'll notice pop up alerts fade in and out with updates; it tells you that the file you've just downloaded is malware/spyware-free, or that Safe Browsing has been enabled when you launch a new browser for the first time. Because you don't have to tap to close an alert, I found the alerts reassuring rather than excessive and annoying.

Baby Boomer's View: Protecting Children and Grandchildren

Withholding the names of child abuse victims who've succumbed to their injuries keeps the public from expressing indignation on behalf of the innocent victim and demand a full inquiry into how social services handled the case. Secrecy by officials prevents good people who might wonder about a series of injuries or suddenly strange behavior (in a child they know well) from reporting. Neighborhood residents need to know when child abuse has ended in tragedy so they can be alert and protective of local children. Silence on the part of social service agencies can be a way to hide mistakes, but even worse, it keeps the potential for more violence alive. The link above is for the full story by New York Times reporter Jo Craven McGinty. It is unsettling.

Davy Jones remembered as 'The Monkees' teenage heartthrob

Davy Jones, the lead singer on the 1960s television band 'The Monkees,' passed away on Wednesday at his home in Florida.

Davy Jones, a former actor turned singer who helped propel the TV rock band The Monkees to the top of the pop charts and into rock 'n' roll history, died Wednesday in Florida.

Jones, lead singer of the 1960s group that was assembled as an American version of the Beatles, died in Indiantown where he lived, his publicist Helen Kensick confirmed.

Jones was a former racehorse jockey-turned-actor who soared to fame in 1965 when he joined The Monkees and they embarked on an adventure that included a wildly popular U.S. television show. Jones sang lead vocals on songs like "I Wanna Be Free" and "Daydream Believer."

The band was assembled as an American version of the Beatles, with its personnel designed to be the instant stars of an American TV series seeking to evoke the Beatles, then already famous for their music and such films as "A Hard Day's Night and "Help!"

Auditions for The Monkees were held in the fall of 1965, attracting some 500 applicants. Jones ? who was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Manchester, England ? had stylishly long hair and a British accent that helped with his selection. He would go on to achieve heartthrob status in the United States.

Nonetheless, musical ability wasn't paramount in the casting decisions. While Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork had some musical experience, Mickey Dolenz had been a child actor, as had Jones along with being a jockey in his native England.

In August 1966, the Beatles performed in San Francisco, playing their last live set for a paying audience. The same month, the Monkees released their first album, introducing the world to the group that would star in the NBC series when it premiered in September 1966.

The first single, "Last Train to Clarksville," became a No. 1 hit. And the show caught on with audiences, featuring fast-paced, helter-skelter comedy inspired as much by the Marx Brothers as the Beatles.

It was a shrewd case of cross-platform promotion. As David Bianculli noted in his "Dictionary of Teleliteracy," ''The show's self-contained music videos, clear forerunners of MTV, propelled the group's first seven singles to enviable positions of the pop charts: three number ones, two number twos, two number threes."

And though initially the Monkees weren't allowed to play their own instruments, they were supported by enviable talent: Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and Neil Diamond penned "I'm a Believer."

Musicians who played on their records included Billy Preston (who only later played with the Beatles), Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Ry Cooder and Neil Young.

After two seasons, the TV series had flared out and was cancelled in the summer of 1968. But the Monkeys remained a nostalgia act for decades.

According to The Monkees website, Monkees.com, Jones left the band in late 1970. In the summer of 1971, he recorded a solo hit "Rainy Jane" and made a series of appearances on American variety and television shows, including "Love American Style" and "The Brady Bunch."

Jones played himself in a widely popular Brady Bunch episode, which aired in late 1971. In the episode, Marcia Brady, president of her school's Davy Jones fan club, promised she could get him to sing at a school dance.

Amid lingering nostalage for the Monkees, by the mid-1980s, Jones teamed up with former Monkee Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and promoter David Fishof for a reunion tour. Their popularity prompted MTV to re-air The Monkees series, introducing the group to a new audience.

In 1987, Jones, Tork and Micky Dolenz recorded a new album, "Pool It." Two years later, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In the late 1990s, the group filmed a special called "Hey, Hey, It's the Monkees."

Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica.

Tote Bags Are More Than Just Carryalls | Business Blog

If you travel often, you may spend money of souvenirs. One of the most useful of souvenirs that you can purchase is a tote case. You will find tote bags almost anywhere your travel, whether you are going for an overnight trip, or on an international vacation. No one would think of traveling without one or more tote bags.

When I travel, I always find that I need at least one more handbag to return home with than I brought with me. Often a tote bag is the perfect size to grab those last minute items from the hotel for the return trip home. I always tuck one flat in the luggage, just in case I do not find a new one that I want to purchase for the trip. They are the perfect size for an additional carryon case for the plane. Apart from that, they are no where near as costly as d a designer handbag.

Most handbags are about a foot wide and one and one-half feet tall. While they are made of many materials, canvas seems to be the most durable and it can be thrown into the washing machine if the handbag gets dirty.

Tote handbags are a great gift for teachers. They can transport papers to and from school for grading. Demonstration projects can be gathered together and transported to school in a tote case. They are study enough to transport text books too.

I am also a crafter. I find that I am able to keep all the supplies needed for a craft in one tote case so that I do not have to go searching through my craft room to get the supplies that I need. Tote carryalls are the perfect size for skeins of yarn and pattern books. I would never travel without one of my trusted tote bags.

Tote handbags are also great re-usable shopping bags. They are much more interesting than those cheap carryalls sold by stores. They are also more durable. Each time you shop, you can be reminded of a fun family trip as you bring home the your supplies.
