PETA to Launch Porn Site (Yes, Seriously)

PETA.

Those shameless animal lovers will stop at nothing when it comes to saving innocent creatures from harm. Or more accurately, stirring up publicity.

Still, this latest eyebrow-raising move set the bar lower than we thought even they could go: They're planning a porn site. Yes, this is true.

Nude for PETA

This Joanna Krupa nude poster? Tame compared to PETA (dot) XXX.

"The racy things we do are sometimes the most effective way that we can get a message to particular individuals," PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said.

Instead of focusing on anti-fur, the porn site will raise awareness of veganism, said Rajt, adding, "We really want to grab people's attention."

So how pornographic will PETA go to do that?

According to Rajt, the site - PETA (dot) xxx - will have enough adult content to qualify for the XXX domain, so it's gonna be hard core stuff.

Intertwined with other graphic images and videos of animals being mistreated and mutilated that viewers may not expect (or want) to see.

"PETA's sexy side displayed in galleries and videos will quickly give way to a sinister world of animal mistreatment uncovered by hidden camera investigations in a very different kind of graphic content," says the group.

Lovely.

Basically a circa 2007 Michael Vick snuff film with full penetration mixed in. Count us in. Is there a way we can buy a membership in advance?!?

'Open wide' for new stem cell potential

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

While highly potent embryonic stem cells are often the subject of ethical and safety controversy, adult-derived stem cells have other problems. As we age, our stem cells are less pliant and less able to transform into the stem cells that science needs to find breakthrough treatments for disease.

An exception to this can be found in the stem cells of oral mucosa, the membrane that lines the inside of our mouths. These cells do not seem to age along with the rest of our bodies. In his lab at Tel Aviv University's Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, Prof. Sandu Pitaru and his graduate students Keren Marinka-Kalmany, Sandra Treves, Miri Yafee and Yossi Gafni, have successfully collected cells from oral mucosa and manipulated them into stem cells.

Though taken from adult tissues, these oral stem cells are almost as easy to manipulate as embryonic stem cells, Prof. Pitaru discovered. His research, which has been published in the journal Stem Cells, opens a new door to stem cell research and potential therapies for neurodegenerative, heart, and autoimmune diseases, as well as diabetes.

The healing powers of Wolverine

Dentists have long been aware of some of the unique properties of the oral mucosa, says Prof. Pitaru. "Wounds in the oral mucosa heal by regeneration, which means that the tissue reverts completely back to its original state," he says. A wound that might take weeks to heal and leave a life-long scar on the skin will be healed in a matter of days inside the mouth, regardless of the patient's age. Except for the mouth, this type of healing usually occurs only in very young organisms and lower amphibians, such as the lizards that can regenerate their tails.

Prof. Pitaru set out to determine if oral mucosa could be a source for young, fetal-like stem cells with this unique healing ability. Even when obtained from an older patient, he says, these stem cells still have properties of young or primitive stem cells ? which have a high capacity to be transformed into different tissues. Prof. Pitaru and his fellow researchers have already succeeded in coaxing oral mucosa stem cells into becoming other significant cells, including bone, cartilage, muscle, and even neurons.

All this, says Prof. Pitaru, is derived from a miniscule biopsy of tissue, measuring 1 by 2 by 3 millimeters. "We are able to grow trillions of stem cells from this small piece of tissue," he explains. The site of the biopsy is readily accessible, and patients experience minimal discomfort and require almost no healing time. This makes the mouth a convenient site for harvesting stem cells.

A safe and effective alternative

Prof. Pitaru and his fellow researchers are currently in pre-clinical trials, implanting these stem cells into various tissues within small rodents. Their projects include researching the impact of the innovative cells as a treatment for chronic heart failure; neurodegenerative diseases; inflammatory autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease; and diabetes.

These diseases are most likely to affect the elderly, and the oral mucosa stem cells would offer a more safe and effective alternative to both embryonic and adult-derived stem cells. Despite their therapeutic potential, patients would be required to take immunosuppressant therapies when being treated with implanted embryonic cells to ensure that the body does not reject the foreign cells. Once implanted, embryonic stem cells often cause tumors to form, Prof. Pitaru says. "Stem cells taken from the tissue of elderly patients have growth limitations and reduced functional capacities."

Stem cells derived from the oral mucosa, however, avoid the pitfalls of their predecessors. Because they stay young, they behave as fetal cells, but there is no danger of rejection because they are taken directly from the patient. And they show no signs of developing the aggressive tumors that surround implantation of embryonic stem cells. With limited risk and high therapeutic potential, these cells could step in to fill a major medical need, Prof. Pitaru concludes.

HBT: Strasburg's next rehab start set for Triple-A

Stephen Strasburg struck out six batters in a three-inning rehab start Monday night at Single-A and the Nationals announced that he?ll move up to Triple-A for his next start Saturday.

In addition to being just one step from the majors Strasburg told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he?s looking forward to facing Triple-A hitters because so many Single-A hitters ?are just up there hacking? and don?t give him an opportunity to work on his full repertoire.

Strasburg, who?s about 12 months removed from Tommy John elbow surgery, could be back in the Nationals? rotation as soon as September 2, with Kilgore reporting that the most likely date for his return to the majors is September 6 or 7 because the minor-league season ends on September 5.

Strasburg had one bad rehab outing last week, but has consistently been clocked in the mid-90s with his fastball and has a remarkable 18 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.

China urges Libya to protect investments (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China on Tuesday urged Libya to protect its investments and said their oil trade benefited both countries, after a Libyan rebel warned that Chinese oil companies could lose out after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi.

The deputy head of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce's trade department, Wen Zhongliang, was responding to a question about the official at the Libyan rebel-run oil firm, AGOCO, who said Russian and Chinese firms could lose out on oil contracts for failing to back the rebellion against Gaddafi.

"China's investment in Libya, especially its oil investment, is one aspect of mutual economic cooperation between China and Libya, and this cooperation is in the mutual interest of both the people of China and Libya," the commerce official Wen told a news conference.

"We hope that after a return to stability in Libya, Libya will continue to protect the interests and rights of Chinese investors and we hope to continue investment and economic cooperation with Libya," said Wen.

If acted upon, the warning from Abdeljalil Mayouf, an information manager at AGOCO, would be a headache for China, the world's second-biggest oil consumer, which last year obtained 3 percent of its imported crude from Libya.

But his warning may not represent the position of an emerging, post-Gaddafi government in Tripoli. Beijing has wooed Libyan rebels, and there is sure to be a cacophony of voices among opposition groups, said Yin Gang, an expert on the Arab world at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

"This was one individual's opinion. I can say in four words: They would not dare; they would not dare change any contracts," said Yin. He said Chinese companies have relatively few investments in Libya, where Western companies were favored even under Gaddafi in recent years.

"Libya is still in a state of chaos and hasn't formed a government. There are certainly different views among the rebels," he added.

The rebel official's warning nonetheless showed the tricky political terrain facing China in Arab countries emerging from popular insurrections, said Ben Simpfendorfer, managing director of Silk Road Associates, a Hong Kong-based consultancy that specializes in business between China and the Middle East.

"China was unusually quick to support to the NTC," said Simpfendorfer, referring to the National Transitional Council, the main rebel group at war with Gaddafi.

"Relative to China's typical foreign policy response, that was quite important, but relative to what Europe and the United States did, that falls short. So I think they will struggle."

China shipped in roughly 150,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Libya last year through Unipec, the trading arm of Asia's top refiner Sinopec Corp that holds the long-term supply contract. That amounted to about one tenth of Libya's crude exports.

"It's not Saudi Arabia, but it's not to be sneezed at," said Simpfendorfer.

WELCOME OR NOT?

By Tuesday, the Libyan embassy in Beijing had switched to using the red, black and green flag favored by the rebels. Any staff inside were not picking up phone calls.

"Even if Chinese companies fail to sign oil contracts with new Libyan government, there is not much impact on China's crude imports," said a Beijing-based industry official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

About 75 Chinese companies operated in Libya before the war, involving about 36,000 staff and 50 projects, according to early Chinese media reports. Many of those firms were engaged in building roads, buildings and infrastructure.

Yet Gaddafi's government was wary of China's economic reach, and Beijing also will face a harder time than Western governments in winning the ears of a government emerging from the rebellion, said Simpfendorfer, the consultant.

China's top three state oil firms CNPC, Sinopec Group and CNOOC all had engineering projects in Libya, but no oil production yet, company officials said.

China and Russia have a tradition of opposing intervention in sovereign states, even when Western government favor military action on humanitarian grounds.

China did not use its U.N. Security Council veto power in March to block a resolution that authorized the NATO bombing campaign against Gaddafi's forces, but it then condemned the strikes and urged compromise between his government and rebels.

Since then, Beijing has courted Libyan rebels by hosting their leaders and sending envoys for talks.
