Withholding the names of child abuse victims who've succumbed to their injuries keeps the public from expressing indignation on behalf of the innocent victim and demand a full inquiry into how social services handled the case. Secrecy by officials prevents good people who might wonder about a series of injuries or suddenly strange behavior (in a child they know well) from reporting. Neighborhood residents need to know when child abuse has ended in tragedy so they can be alert and protective of local children. Silence on the part of social service agencies can be a way to hide mistakes, but even worse, it keeps the potential for more violence alive. The link above is for the full story by
New York Times reporter Jo Craven McGinty. It is unsettling.
